The presence of cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins within the myocardium allows the heart to fulfill critical physiological functions. However‚ the excessive deposition of ECM proteins (mostly collagens) within the myocardium can contribute to the transformation of the heart whose function relies on optimal mechanics into a dysfunctional organ.
