In the 1960s radiation therapy was considered an empirical, clinical discipline with a relatively low probability of success. This situation has changed considerably during the past 40 years. Radiation therapy is based heavily on fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science and radiation biology as well as electrical and mechanical engineering, making it a truly interdisciplinary field, unparalleled by any other clinical discipline.
