The discovery by Patricia Goldman-Rakic that dopamine plays important roles in the modulation of prefrontal cortex neuronal activity during working memory was a milestone in the field of monoamine research. Since then, a significant number of studies from cellular to system physiology have investigated the neural basis of monoamine modulation in the cortex, providing seminal insights into potential treatments for schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatry disorders.
