Hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke, is present in approximately one-quarter of the adult population of Western societies. Seven percent of deaths worldwide are attributed to hypertension, and the rate of end-stage renal disease due to hypertension has doubled since 1982.
