G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a major role in regulating the overall homeostasis of complex organisms such as mammals but are also found in primitive species such as Dictyostelium (slime mold) and yeast. The GPCR superfamily is quite diverse and sequencing has revealed more than 850 genes comprising approximately 3%of the human genome.
