Following Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays, early experimenters quickly realised that this new technology held promise for investigating the hitherto unknown area of the gastrointestinal tract. Only 1 year after the publication of Roentgen’s paper, W. Becher fed lead subacetate to a guinea pig and thus performed probably the first contrast study of a living stomach.
