The addition of functional image information to conventional staging procedures, be it through positron emission tomography (PET) as a stand-alone unit or the development of combined PET/CT or by correlation of modalities using software-based image fusion, is striking in several respects. Not many years ago the use of imaging modalities, particularly in oncology, was generally limited to the search for a tumorous lesion or its metastases followed by immediate surgical or other treatment.
