One of the major reasons that patients go to the doctor is to seek diagnosis and treatment for infectious diseases. The current approach to infectious disease is influenced by two competing factors: good evidence for how and when to use increasingly powerful antibiotics, and the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance, threatening to make those same antibiotics less effective, or even ineffective, in the treatment of disease.
