With the rapid expansion of medical technologies and treatments over the past several decades fungi have emerged as important causative agents of human infection (mycosis). Improved survival afforded by cancer and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) therapies, intensive care units, and broad-spectrum antibacterial agents continue to increase the population at risk for these infections.
