The establishment of stem cell (SC) lines in large animal species could lead to important improvements in the biomedical fi eld as well as in agriculture and animal science. In particular, domestic animal SC would have a positive impact on the health and production traits of these species through genetic engineering. At the same time, because of their great similarity to humans in morphological, physiological, and immunological functions, large animals are a very effective and suitable animal model for biomedical studies and preclinical trials, allowing us to select the most appropriate species for a specifi c pathology to be addressed.
