The backbone of neural membranes is the lipid bilayer, which is composed of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, and cholesterol. Embedded in the lipid bilayer are proteins of various shapes, sizes, and traits. The intricate interactions among glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, cholesterol, and proteins provide neural membranes with delicate, dynamic, and stable shape responsible for numerous neural membrane activities.
