Infections following joint arthroplasty are a severe complication for each patient with a negative impact on their quality of life. Infections are also a challenge for the surgeons, microbiologists and hospitals involved. Finally, due to their financial impact infections will increasingly be monitored and controlled, as they have a direct influence on how hospitals will be reimbursed; as such, preventing infections has been identified as a source of cost reduction.
