Hematopoiesis is among the most thoroughly studied tissue systems investigated in humans and other organisms. This is true for many reasons, especially because of the accessibility of samples from finger prick, venipunctures, or leukophoresis to bone marrow aspiration. The availability of mouse models and genetic mutations, some of which mimic human diseases, have enhanced its attractions as an experimentally tractable system for study.
