There has been a steady increase in the number of known marine toxins in the past few decades. The remarkable molecular diversity of these and other marine natural products probably exceeds the diversity of organisms that live in the sea. Earlier pioneering books on marine toxins such as those by Halstead (1965, 1967, 1970) and Hashimoto (1979) greatly stimulated scientific interest in toxins from marine animals and plants.
