As in the two previous editions of this textbook, we record here the debt we owe to the children we treat. Ours is a privileged specialty: we watch our patients grow and mature, often developing a close bond with both child and family. When matters go well, there is a very personal sense of fulfillment; when matters go ill, we share a family’s distress.
