The seeds of this project were sown at a chance meeting between one of the editors (JS) and Marion Ball, PhD, at The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Ball, who is arguably the matriarch of medical informatics, convinced us that we should take on the challenge of describing the components of the new field of Anesthesia Informatics. When Keith Ruskin agreed to participate as a co-editor, the vision for the content of this book began to materialize.
