Ultrasonography has evolved from a branch of acoustics that deals with the study and use of sound waves to an important clinical modality in assessing varied structures and organ systems throughout the body. Much of the work began in the 1940s after World War II by examining intracranial abnormalities, and later intrathoracic and intra-abdominal structures.
