The idea for this handbook was sparked in anticipation of the 30th anniversary of the American Sociological Association’s Section on Aging and the Life Course (SALC) in August of 2009. We received an invitation from Howard Kaplan at Texas A&M University to edit a Handbook of Sociology of Aging as part of Springer’s series on Handbooks of Sociology and Social Research.
