Sir William Osler liked to say, “To study the phenomena of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all.”1 Osler’s admonition still rings true in today’s world of rapid information retrieval but ever-increasing pressures on the time spent with patients.
