Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a unique type of mesenchymal tumor that may occur anywhere in the GI tract, from esophagus to anus. They are exhibiting a wide spectrum of clinical behaviour, from benign, small, incidentally detected nodules to frank malignant lesions, widespread within the abdomen.
