The European-Japanese Joint Conferences for Stroke Surgery were initiated in 2001 by Prof. Y. Sakurai, Sendai, and Prof. Y. Yonekawa, Zürich, under the name the Swiss-Japanese Join  Conference. The first meeting in Zürich was dedicated to the management of subarachnoid hemorrhage and unruptured aneurysms.
