Having been started in Boston by Dr. J. Roswell Gallagher in 1951, adolescent medicine is a  relatively young specialty. Board certification was first offered in 1994. Many practitioners consider adolescent medicine to include ages 12–21 years, although exceptions are made at both ends of the age spectrum.
