For many years the diagnosis of pericardial disease has been primarily made non-invasively. Our understanding was based on pathophysiology and the impairment of function. The assessment of the etiology was, when at all, left to the pathologist at the time of necropsy. Invasive and interventional procedures were questioned and neglected and therefore not available in the majority of the institutions.
