In the past 15 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the extent of our knowledge regarding the importance of transporter proteins that govern drug disposition and response. For example, the human multidrug and toxin extrusion protein 1, which is important for the elimination of organic cations and drugs, was cloned and functionally characterized in 2005.
