The attrition rate in the clinical development of new chemical entities (NCEs) has increased over time, in spite of escalating funds allocated to research and development. Less than 10% of all NCEs succeed in effectively treating some clinical symptom. NCEs develop to treat central nervous system (CNS) disorders, together with oncology, exhibit the greatest attrition of all.
