Infectious diseases have been, alongside cardiovascular diseases and cancer, the main threat to human health. Acute and chronic respiratory diseases, especially pulmonary tuberculosis, but also malaria, AIDS and acute infections of the digestive tract are responsible for a large portion of mortality, both in developing and developed countries.
