It has always been important to me that as clinicians we should challenge Voltaire’s point of view by ensuring that we gain a better understanding of therapies, illness, and people. I have been fortunate to be part of the relatively young specialty of palliative medicine and to be taught by some of the protagonists of the hospice movement who instilled within me the importance of education and training.
